Meeting Eduardo Siu was a serendipitous moment. It was akin to divine intervention. Following disagreements with an editor of note, I found Siu through a mutual friend, and gave him an 87-min. film (work in progress) about an artist who achieved global fame by blazing a trail as an artistic director at the opening ceremonies of three Olympic Games. The artist couldn't have achieved such lofty acclaim had he not distinguished himself as a designer of provocative themes in the annual Carnival in Trinidad, his hometown.
Siu had no inkling of the structure and competitive aspects of the Carnival, much more the personality of the designer/artist who was reviled for his themes about good and evil by a large section of his own countrymen, that is, until he was celebrated around the world for his Olympic success in Barcelona.
However, Siu and I worked on the project assiduously for several months, without recourse to relevant source material that the previous editor refused to realease. The result was a 56-min film that carried enough cachet to meet submission standards at PBS and film festivals around the world. (The film won the Best Documentary prize at its first outing.)
I'll forever be grateful to Eduardo Siu for his impeccable editing style, dedication and craftmanship during post-production. At the Fort Laudedale Film Festival, I introduced him to a capacity crowd, informing them that the film they were about to see became possible in large measure to Siu's tenacity and professionalism in the editing suite. Afterward, while the credits rolled, a rousing ovation rumbled through the cinema for more than a minute. We both looked at each other, recognizing that we had brought life to a dead work, and, for the first time, Siu had displayed emotion, the result of his huge role in the process.
Not only would I recommend this young man, whom I believe will be part, if not the vanguard, of the newest wave in filmmaking, but also seek his advice before I undertake future assignments.
Eduardo Siu is that competent.
